Desiccants For Desiccant Dryers

Compressed air is widely regarded as the fourth utility within industry today. Ensuring the quality of the air within a plant or system is crucial to long term reliability of operation.

More and more industries require air of increasing standards of dryness and purity. In order to achieve these requirements, the use of desiccant dryers and associated filtration are used. This could be either a Point of Use System or a factory wide requirement.

The Desiccant (adsorbent) used within desiccant dryers will have a finite life and often failure is experienced in the most spectacular failures, which can impact massively upon the business. Regular programmed maintenance of the adsorbent and systems can help mitigate this risk.

Typical Adsorbents used within Desiccant Dryers:

Molecular Sieves used within Desiccant Dryers come in 3 primary generic forms, 3A, 4A, & 13X (10A). Each form has its own specific properties and applications, and all retain a polar preference for adsorption of water.

Molecular sieves have the ability within the correct dyer set-up to easily achieve dewpoints of -70oC DP (2ppmV) and below.

Activated Alumina is widely used for compressed air drying in both pressure swing adsorption (PSA) systems & heat re-generative systems. These types of dryers using alumina can typically dry compressed air down to below -40oC DP (125ppmV)

These materials are generally supplied in a beaded format which allows for good gas flow characteristics and minimal pressure losses through the bed.

Bead sizes range from 3mm (1/8”) to 6mm (1/4”)
